Former AFL midfielder Shaun Edwards has officially signed with SUANFC ahead of the upcoming 2018 NEAFL season.
Edwards, who played 24 games across GWS and Essendon, met with Club officials last week, finalising a deal that would see the 24 year-old sporting hoops next year, after retiring from AFL football with Sydney at the end of this season.
Originally from St Mary’s Football Club in the NTFL, the exciting midfielder spoke with the Club about his excitement joining The Students football program.
“I’m super excited to join Sydney Uni and some old friends in Craig Bird and Brandon Jack. I’ve witnessed Sydney Uni’s development first hand this year in the NEAFL and I’m pumped to be able to help them push further into the finals,” said Edwards.
“2018 will be a good chance for me to develop again as a footballer, but just as importantly, off the field as well with my chosen academic path and giving back to the younger guys of the Club.”
Senior Coach Tom Morrison also spoke of the new dynamic Edwards brings to The Students’ squad in 2018.
“We are really excited to have secured Shaun’s services for 2018 and beyond. We are also really happy to assist Shaun with the next chapter of his life after finishing his AFL career earlier this year,” said Morrison.
“No doubt Shaun will become a well-respected member of our playing group by making the most of his football, employment, study and community opportunities in the years ahead. Shaun is a young man of outstanding character who has a passion to help others, which is something we appreciate and support in our program.”
“The attributes that Shaun possesses on the football field are areas of need for us and we know he will be great fit. His skill set and physical attributes accompanied with a sound work ethic will ensure he has a big impact for us this year.”
Edwards becomes the third major signing of the summer, along with former Swans pair Craig Bird and Brandon Jack.
