6 wins from 8 games saw the Students enjoy their most successful round of the year to date. With wins against Southport, UTS, Randwick, East Coast and Macquarie University, the Students hard work over preseason is already starting to pay off.
6th Grade Plats: Sydney AFL Division 5
An Early Saturday morning clash between rivals kicked off Round 3 for the Students.
The Plats visited Waverly Oval to take on bitter rivals UTS, hoping to bounce back from a tough 2-point loss last week.
Things started badly for the Students, with UTS kicking away to a 35-point lead in the first quarter.
An improved effort was required in the second, and the boys did just that, managing 5 shots on goal. Despite this, UTS outscored the Students by 6 points to take a commanding 41-point lead into the main break.
Neither team really dominated the third. The Students backline continued to play well after a good second quarter, keeping UTS to just 4 goals in 2 quarters. Despite this effort, the Students could only manage 2 behinds for the quarter, finding themselves trailing by 9 goals at the final break.
UTS kicked on in the last, managing 4 goals to the Students 2, finishing what was a tough start to the day for the club. Luther Canute, Tomas Edwards and Harry Skacel were best field for the Students.
Final Score: UTS 13.19 97 def. Sydney University 3.6 24.
5th Grade Golds: Sydney AFL Division 4
Following the first game at Waverly Oval, the Golds were up next looking to win the club’s first game of the day.
The Students started on the back foot, going behind by 3 goals at the first break.
Ravaged by injuries, the Students managed to defy the odds, kicking 4 goals to 3 in the second, to reduce the margin to just 10 points at the half.
With 0 rotations, the Students had to dig deep in the third to keep competitive. Kicking 2 goals to UTS’ 3, the Students trailed by 15 points at the final break and would require a herculean effort in the final quarter.
Against all the odds, the Golds showcased true Students spirit, kicking 4 goals to 1 in the last quarter to claim an historic win against their bitter rivals. Chris Mohen, Luke Higgins and Hary Murdoch were the best afield for the Students, in a game where a true team effort was required to claim a win that won’t be forgotten.
Final Score: UTS 11.2 68 def. by Sydney University 11.10 76.
U19 Colts: Sydney AFL U19s Division 1
The Colts travelled out to the hills to face off with East Coast, hoping to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
The first quarter saw an even contest take place, with the Colts eventually getting on top get of the Eagles, kicking 4 majors to the Eagles 2.
The second quarter was much the same. Both sides could only manage 2 goals each in what was a good, tough game of football.
After taking a 16-point lead into the half, the Colts grinded out another 4 goals in the third, while keeping East Coast to just the 2, increasing their lead to a comfortable 27 points at 3-quarter time.
The final quarter saw East Coast make a run, kicking 4 goals, but after 2 goals in response, and 3 quarters of dominance, the Colts hung on to run out 16-point victors.
Harry Harvey booted 3 goals for the day, while Jack Fox managed 2 and best afield honours.
Final Score: East Coast 10.5 65 def. by Sydney University 12.9 81.
3rd Grade Blues: Sydney AFL Division 1
The Blues were the first Students side on Trumper Park Saturday, hoping to build on their solid start to the 2016 season.
The first quarter was a hotly contested, with neither team really taking control of the game. Both teams kicked 2 goals each, but it was UTS who took a 2-point lead into the first break.
The second quarter saw the Students wrestle back the lead, kicking 4 goals to 3 in what was an entertaining quarter of football.
The 1-goal halftime lead was quickly improved on, as the Students kicked 2 goals and kept UTS goalless in the third.
UTS fought back in the last quarter, this time kicking 2 of their own and keeping the Students scoreless. Despite this spirited comeback, the Students hung tough and held on to prevail by 5 points.
Gab Robbie booted 4 goals for the Students, while Micael Fogarty and Nik Dale were outstanding all day.
Final Score: UTS 7.9 51 def. by Sydney University 8.8 56.
1st Grade Seniors: NEAFL
The NEAFL boys travelled north to play Southport on Saturday, with both teams coming off convincing wins the week before.
The Students began the game in complete control, moving the ball quickly through the middle of the ground and hitting their targets up forward. A the first break, the Students lead by 43 points, with the likes of Jackson Potter, Tom Young, Sam Tagliabue and Max Wilson leading the way.
The second quarter was a much closer affair with the Sharks improving their effort around the ground. Despite this, Southport could only manage to outscore the Students by a single point, handing Sydney Uni a 7-goal halftime lead.
Southport began to wrestle back momentum in the second half, winning stoppages and delivering well to their forward line. The Sharks managed 4 goals to the Students 2 in the third, despite spirited efforts from Students’ Mitch Mahady, Jarrod Irving and Aaron Day in defence.
The final quarter saw 9 goals kicked by the two teams in an entertaining finish to the game. In the end, the Students came out with a 30-point win away from home against a quality opposition.
Nick Winmar and Mike Manteit both kicked 3 goals each, while Lewis Stevenson picked up 26 disposals and 2 goals in a best-on-ground display.
Final Score: Southport 12.12 84 def. by Sydney University 18.6 114.
4th Grade Reds: Sydney AFL Division 2
The Reds were looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week as they found themselves away to Randwick.
The Students struggled in front of goal in the first, kicking 4 behinds for the quarter, while Randwick took the lead, kicking 3 goals.
The Students inaccuracy continued in the second as they begun to dig themselves into a deeper hole, this time kicking 3 behinds to Randwick’s 2 goals, as the opposition ran out to a 28-point lead at the main break.
A lifting halftime talk from coach Millsteed saw the Students pile on 5 goals to Randwick’s 0, miraculously stealing the lead before the 3-quarter time break.
The Students were outscored in the last; as Randwick managed 3 goals. Defying the odds, in a gutsy effort by the whole team, the Reds held on to sing the song at the end of a hard-fought game, winning by just 2 points.
Jon Weir, Brent Pollock and Michael Carey were best afield, while Gordon Willis booted 3 second-half goals to help the Students get a much-deserved win.
Final Score: Randwick City 8.654 def. by Sydney University 7.14 56.
2nd Grade Reserves: Sydney AFL Premier Division
The Prems were the last team to play UTS on Saturday, with the fixture played at Trumper Oval in Paddington.
The first quarter was quite a low-scoring affair, with neither team breaking away. UTS kicked 2 goals to the Students 1, to hold a 1-goal lead at the first break.
UTS stretched their lead by a goal in the second, as the game started to open up. The Students were able to match the Bats for most of the quarter, but at the main break, UTS still held an 11-point lead.
The Student wrestled back the momentum in the third through some great work around the stoppage, leading into some clean ball movement. The Students managed to outscore UTS, kicking 5 goals to 4, to reduce the lead to just 1 goal at 3-quarter time.
Despite their work in the third, the Students fell short of UTS in the last quarter, as the Bats went on to kick 3 goals to 1 and win by 14 points.
Nick Bowen continued his good form for the Prems, with a best-on-ground performance, while Matt Vicic also continued his goal kicking form, booting 3 majors.
Final Score: UTS 13.15 93 def. Sydney University 11.13 79.
Sydney University Bombers (Women’s)
The Bombers got their season off to the best possible start, crushing Macquarie University by 99 points on Saturday. A four-quarter effort saw the girls play some great team football in their first game after a long preseason of hard work.
Final Score: Sydney University 100 def. Macquarie University 1.
The Prems, Colts and Bombers all have the bye this week, while 5 of our 6 games are spread out across Manly, Balmain and Warwick Farm. The NEAFL boys are playing Canberra at our only game in Drummoyne for the season.
