Over the weekend, former Student Jarrod Witts was awarded the 2019 Gold Coast Suns Club Champion after a stellar season for the Suns at AFL level.

Named co-captain at the beginning of the 2019 season, Witts played every game for the Suns this season, winning the Club Champion award ahead of fellow co-captain David Swallow and teammate Darcy Macpherson.

The 26-year-old broke the record for most hit outs in a regular season, registering 1008 from his 22 games at an average of 45.82.

Captain of the Club’s inaugural Colts (U/19s) side, Witts also enjoyed premiership success with the Colts in 2009.

Originally, Witts was identified as a talented rugby player and cricketer, before he was awarded a NSW Scholarship by Collingwood in 2008.

In 2011, Witts was drafted by the Pies with pick 67 in the National Draft, one year after the Pies had also drafted Sydney Uni player Tom Young.

Witts played 38 games for Collingwood between 2012-1016, before he was traded to the Gold Coast Suns, where he recently signed a 5-year contract extension to remain a Sun until the end of 2024.

From everyone here at Sydney Uni AFL, we wish Jarrod all the best with the season ahead.
