Match of the Round: Womens Div One vs Randwick

Friday night at Oval One is shaping up to be a blockbuster as SUANFC’s Women’s Division One side host Randwick City Saints in a top-of-the-table clash under lights. The Bombers, sitting undefeated at 5–0, will take on a determined Randwick outfit currently second on the ladder at 4–1—setting the stage for one of the biggest games of the season so far.

Niccoll’s team has been nothing short of outstanding in 2024, entering Round 7 as the only undefeated side in the competition. It’s been a stunning rise for a squad that has historically struggled for consistency since being promoted to Division One six seasons ago.

“Since moving up, the Ressies hadn’t made finals and two years ago six wins was our best return. To now be 5–0 and sitting on top of the ladder is rare air,” said Niccoll. “If we were to beat Randwick again, it would be massive for the confidence of the group. These are the games where belief becomes something bigger.”

That belief has been built on hard work, unity, and a shared understanding of what it takes to succeed in a demanding division. The midfield unit continues to fire, the backline remains disciplined under pressure, and the team’s ability to rise to big moments has seen them outlast every opponent to date.

Club Chairperson, Jim Beard, reflected on the team’s journey to division one:

“In the years leading up to 2022, we bounced between Division One and Two each season. We were strong in Div Two but couldn’t quite cement our place in Div One. After a tough 2022, we made the decision to commit to staying in Div One. It’s a testament to the players and coaches who have continued to build and improve the program each year. Now, we’re playing in top-of-the-ladder clashes—it’s really exciting to be thinking about finals!”

But Friday presents their biggest test yet. Randwick, grand finalists in 2023 and a powerhouse of the division, will be out to even the score and reclaim top spot.

Fans are encouraged to get down to Oval One this Friday night and get behind the squad in what promises to be a fierce, high-stakes contest between the competition’s top two sides.
