Matt Powys joins the 200 club: a milestone for one of SUANFC’s greats
On Saturday against Parramatta, Matt Powys ran out for his 200th game in the Blue and Gold—a feat that cements his legacy as one of the most respected and enduring figures in the club’s history.

For 15 years, Powys has been a constant presence at SUANFC. Across his career, he’s done it all – playing with distinction in the NEAFL, Premier Division, and more recently becoming an icon of the Reserves team. To notch 200 games at a club like SUANFC, known for its size and depth is a remarkable achievement that only a select few have reached.
More than just his on-field performances, Powys’s contribution to the club stretches far beyond the boundary line. Currently serving as Vice President of Men’s Football Operations, he’s played a key role in shaping the direction of the club while supporting players and coaches alike. He’s also previously served as SUANFC’s Volunteer Coordinator, offering countless hours to ensure game days and club functions run smoothly.
“Matt is an unbelievable teammate—and an even better mate,” said one of his long-time teammates ahead of the milestone. “To play 200 games at this club is so significant and puts him up there as one of the club greats. It’s an absolute honour to share the milestone with him this weekend.”

Former teammate and close friend Ben Hawtin penned a fitting tribute to mark the occasion:
“Now looking at that figure, you’d be forgiven for thinking, ‘there’s no way this bloke is any good at footy’—but Powys has covered almost every role the club has to offer. What he lacks in raw athleticism, he more than makes up for in footy smarts.”
“He’s always willing to give his time to the club or anyone who needs it. A true clubman who’s won B&F awards, been named in Teams of the Year, and is a pleasure to have in any team. Whether it’s a Friday night beer or a Saturday night celebration, Powys is the kind of teammate you’re lucky to have.”
From early days playing with some of the club’s all-time greats, to now being recognised as one himself, Matt Powys’s journey is one built on loyalty, love of the game, and a deep connection to the SUANFC community.
The reserves team rose to the occasion on the weekend to defeat the Paramatta Goannas by a comfortable 37 points. A four goal to one first quarter gave the Students a handy lead and they never let Paramatta back in the game. Powys capped off the day with 2 goals.
We thank Powys for everything he’s given to the club so far—on the field, off the field, and everywhere in between. It’s an honour to have him as part of the fabric of SUANFC.
Here’s to 200 games—and hopefully a few more left in the tank.
