SUANFC bids farewell to Ben Merson

Premier Division Coach Ben Merson has informed SUANFC that he will not return to coaching in 2017 due to career commitments in the coming year.

Merson, who lead the Students’ Premier Division side to finals in 2015, has laid a strong foundation during his time at the club, working tirelessly supporting both the development of the Club’s lower-grade players, while providing an environment suitable for elite, state-league players to thrive.

SUANFC Vice-President Sam Power, who worked closely with Merson during his 2 years at SUANFC, spoke highly of his impact on multiple club-related areas.

“Ben’s energy from the moment he stepped into the Premier Division head coach role late in the preseason program of 2015 has been outstanding. He quickly gelled with the playing group and played an important role in developing talent and driving professionalism in what has been a period of transition for the Club” said Power.

“Ben’s dogged determination to finish off the 2016 season strong is to be admired. He leaves behind a body of work developing the Premier Division program which will be built upon in the coming seasons. Ben should look back fondly on the successes of his time as coach but also on the role he has played in the successes that will follow.”

SUANFC General Manager Tristan Liles also spoke highly of Ben’s time in the program.

“Ben has been an important contributor to our football program here at SUANFC. His ability to focus on the task at hand and keep his players motivated in what is a challenging environment has been exceptional” said Liles.

“We wish Ben all the best with his career aspirations and look forward to seeing him around the club in the upcoming season.”

SUANFC will begin its search for a new Premier Division coach within the upcoming weeks.
