Reliable utility Sam Fong was among the standout performers for SUANFC in 2016, following a consistent season across half-back and on the wing.
The Claremont product averaged disposals 18 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles in 17 games for Daniel Gilmore’s NEAFL side this season, being named among the best 6 times, including a best-on-ground performance in Round 1 against GWS.
Chatting with SUANFC this week, Fong spoke of the challenges he faced during the 2016 season.
“The challenge given to me early in the year to move down back, as a rebounding defender, was something I really relished” said Fong.
In his second year at SUANFC, Fong succumb to sickness throughout the season, when he missed time due to a bout of glandular fever.
“While, I missed patches of the year with illness I was able to regain some momentum towards the business end of the season, playing some of my better football.”
Off the field, Fong has worked hard to manage both his football career and study, completing 11 units in his law/business degree across 3 different universities.
“My ultimate off-field goal in 2016 was to complete my Law/Commerce degree by the end of the year” said Fong.
“Juggling the huge study load, while playing footy and finding time to unwind with the boys has been difficult. But it has also been by far one the most rewarding year in my life.”
“Although we feel short of the ultimate success, it has been a memorable journey in 2016 and several of our wins, including the win over NT in Darwin will stick with me for a long time.”
Despite the setbacks of study and sickness, Fong’s efforts on the training track during the week and furious competitiveness on matchday will see him push for the top honour at the Driscoll Medal.
With the Timothy Driscoll Medal Vote Count & Dinner less than 2 weeks away, SUANFC will be posting daily stories about the coveted night, such as profiles of Driscoll Medal contenders, and updates surrounding special guests and ticket information.
