Vale Kevin Hall

The SUANFC community mourns the passing, too soon of Kevin Hall last weekend. Kevin, Jane and Richard Hall (Colts player) were a crucial part of the Sydney Uni Colts and broader Club set up during the crucial 2009 to circa 2015 period.

Thanks to Rob Shouldice (father of ex Colt Hugh) for letting the Club know and coordinating the following Club statement/testimonials. Details of the Celebration of Life service for Kevin taking place next week on 5 December. For details and to RSVP, please use this link.

From Rob Shouldice:

“Kevin (72) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday 23rd November 2024.  He departs from us leaving his lovely wife Jane and his son Richard, of whom he was immensely proud.

Kevin was an AFL stalwart.  He came to SUANFC after coaching with Drummoyne Power JAFL for 10 years.  His role with SUANFC was pivotal in developing the new generation of Colts, bridging the gap for young players from junior AFL in Sydney to seniors footy.  He brought a wealth of AFL knowledge and contacts associated with the game from far and wide.

Kevin’s true AFL spirit and calling was more than coaching.  If there is a modern holistic approach to coaching of young and emerging AFL players, then Kevin was its early proponent.  He understood the importance of player welfare, their thinking, their concerns beyond those of the training paddock, skill level or on game day.

Being team manager, and never having played AFL, he listened to my views and suggestions with the same care and interest he showed many young players under his wing.  Often with a witty rejoinder or wistful smile.  Simply put, he could ‘hear you out’, and then add some helpful comment.  He gave of his time and interest to any young player or parent who sought to improve themselves because this was his passion.

He leaves a tremendous legacy at SUANFCWe are shocked and saddened to hear of Kevin’s passing and pass our condolences to his family.  We fully appreciate and respect the legacy he created for SUANFC.”

From Jason McLennan:

“Kevin was able to articulate clearly, and in an unbiased fashion, why I was involved in football and SUANFC. He identified (as did Jane) the thread of community service, development of youth and fun, that is part of the SUANFC experience. Even when navigating huge and unnecessary obstacles that were put in Richard’s path in his football, Kevin never lost his sense of humour and perspective. He saw the ethical and fair path and didn’t let anyone stand in his way, a gentle but resolute sort of personal strength not prone to anger or resentment. He was really kind and thoughtful to the club leaders of the day and shared his experience and wisdom with us. Knowing Kevin believed in our vision (mostly people with no family experience yet..) of developing and providing a place to play for local youth footballers was hugely significant. He eventually joined the committee and helped keep the momentum in the Colts program going (even after Richard finished up his footy with us) when it could have easily succumbed to negative outside pressures and the in-club demands of an already growing and packed club agenda, and become all “too hard”. I reflect on Kevin now as someone I enjoyed some wonderful times with, and I realise he was helping support me more than I was helping him and his family.

From Wil Macbeth:

“During the challenging period of coaching transition from the early, Colts premiership years, Kevin kindly volunteered to offer whatever support – both logistical and via encouragement – was needed by the coaches and team managers. He had great empathy for the inherent challenges of coaching and managing junior and youth football teams, no doubt borne from his own experiences at Drummoyne Power. The level of help he provided, whether it be transporting gear, assisting with matchday administrative requirements, offering ideas, or simply giving a pat on the back and a “good job, coach” after a win or a loss, cannot be understated.

Personally, Kevin’s warm, empathetic ear, and wise, constructive counsel got me through some pretty tough times coaching at the footy club. He seemed to instinctively know when I needed a boost and what to say to pep me up. He always reassured me that the direction, approaches and levels of expected standards we were applying and executing as coaches were the right ones in terms of developing young men to be better footballers and, more importantly, good men, despite some unexpected but unavoidable difficulties.

I have thought fondly about Kevin on many occasions since those times at the footy club and now regret not reaching out to re-connect. He may not have realised it, but Kevin had a significant positive impact on me, and I will always feel indebted and privileged to have known and spent time with him, albeit for only a few years of our lives. Jane and Rich can be very proud of Kevin and the type of person he was. He was certainly a man of exemplary character that I will always remember with warmth.

Vale Kevin Hall.”

From Chas Wilkinson:

“No Kevin Hall, no SUANFC Colts”. While this might be said of few of those involved in the re-emergence of the Colts at SUANFC, it is most certainly true of Kevin. While there was no task Kevin wasn’t willing to do, it was his kindness, and his ability to sensitively communicate with club parents, players, volunteers, and equally those of the opposition that set Kevin apart. Kevin cared. He was fair, and while he had an ability to understand what was at the heart of each conversation he had, he never wavered in principle. During a challenging time at SUANFC, as we found our feet in providing an environment for young men, Kevin found a way to make us laugh, and see the lighter side of life, which ultimately and indelibly contributed to setting our Colts program on the right path. Our current crop of U/19s, in part, have Kevin to thank for the success the Colts experience.”
