1st Grade Seniors: NEAFL
The SUANFC NEAFL side suffered a tough 87-point loss at the hands of the UWS Giants in Saturday’s Preliminary Final.
The Giants started the game with 5 unanswered goals in the first quarter, as the AFL-reserve side raced out to a 35-point lead by the first break.
Hitting the scoreboard in the second quarter, the Students put consecutive goals together through the middle of the quarter, and looked certain to work their way back into the contest, before the Giants booted the final 3 goals to lead by 50 points at the main break.
Neither team took control of proceedings in the third quarter, as the two sides shared 4 goals evenly between them. Heading into the final quarter, it was the Giants by 48 points.
The final quarter saw the Giants run over the top of the Students, as the Grand-Final bound side booted 6 goals to zip.
Tom Young (32 disposals, 7 marks) and Tim Barton (21 disposals, 7 marks) were best afield for the Students, while Jake Derickx kicked 2 goals.
Final Score: UWS Giants 17.15 117 def. Sydney University 4.6 30.
Sydney University Bombers (Women’s)
The Bombers have booked their place in next week’s Women’s Premier Division Grand Final, with a 28-point win over Newtown on Sunday.
Leading by as much as 14 points at the main break, Newtown narrowed the margin to just 1 goal heading into the final quarter.
Despite a spirited effort from Newtown, the Bombers kicked the final 3 goals of the game, and now face rivals UNSW in this week’s Grand Final.
Alice Wood, Rachael Stack and Anna Johnston were all named among the best for the Bombers.
Final Score: Sydney University 8.11 59 def. Newtown 4.7 31.
