5th Grade Golds: Sydney AFL Division 4
The Golds returned to the field after a 2 week break as they took on South West Sydney in Warwick Farm on Saturday.
Kicking 4 goals to 1 in the first quarter, the Golds raced of to an early lead in trying conditions.
The Magpies fought back from a quiet first quarter to kick 3 goals in the second, but it was once again the Golds who were the superior team, kicking 3.4 to increase their lead to 4 goals at the half.
The third quarter saw both teams work hard defensively to limit their opponents scoring chances, with just 3 goals finding their way through the big sticks.
Heading into the final quarter, the Golds held a 32-point lead, and would only increase this margin after holding the Magpies goalless for the quarter.
The Golds enjoyed their 8th consecutive win in fashion, finishing with a comfortable 40-point margin. Lachlan Godfrey snagged 4 goals, while Ryan Nyberg and Adam Clark were named best afield.
Final Score: South West Sydney 5.2 32 def. by Sydney University 10.12 72.
4th Grade Reds: Sydney AFL Division 2
Following the Golds at Rosedale Park, the Reds were looking to reduce the gap between them and finals against a beatable Magpies side.
The Reds were the better of the two sides when it came to taking their chances in the first quarter, kicking 3 goals straight to the Magpies’ 3.4.
The tight affair continued in the second quarter, with both sides kicking 2 goals. Once again the Magpies threw away opportunities, kicking 4 behinds in the second quarter.
Inaccuracy was once again the theme of the third quarter as the Magpies could only manage 1.7. The Reds on the other hand, took the most of their one chance for the quarter, kicking 1 goal straight, to trail by 13 points at the final break.
Things finally started to go the way of the Magpies in the final quarter, as the Reds conceded 5 goals to 2 to see any chance of a valuable road win slip away.
Sebastian Duggan, Peter Lloyd and James Nettle managed to kick 2 goals each, while Luke Freemantle and Stephen Lloyd worked hard in the middle all game.
Final Score: South West Sydney 11.18 84 def. Sydney University 8.5 53.
3rd Grade Blues: Sydney AFL Division 1
The Blues played Balmain in the first game to be played at No.1 Oval on Saturday, following the cancellation of the Colts and Plats.
Last time these two sides met, the Blues won a tough game in the wet at Mahoney Reserve in Marrickville.
The first quarter saw both teams enjoy periods of dominance, with the Blues sitting on top by just 3 points at the first break.
Both teams struggled in front of goal in the second quarter, kicking 3 behinds each, but it was Balmain who would go into the halftime break in the lead by just 4 points.
The tables turned in the third quarter as it was the Blues who outscored Balmain, scoring 3 goals to 2, to retrieve the lead by the final break.
Defensively, the Blues stood tall in the final quarter, holding the challenging Balmain scoreless, while converting 2 goals to win by 23 points.
Clinton Wells kicked 5 goals, while Sean Stokoe and Tom Whitaker were also handy in the win.
Final Score: Sydney University 9.10 64 def. Balmain 6.5 41.
Sydney University Bombers (Women’s)
The Bombers once again stretched their undefeated streak with a comfortable 114-point win over Auburn on Saturday.
Controlling the game from start to finish, the Bombers held the Giants to 1 point for the entire game, with the likes of Meredith Gray, Stephanie Walker and Chloe Scrimshaw sharing 13 of the Bombers’ 17 goals for the game.
Familiar faces in Alice Wood and Nicola Barr were named among the best, alongside the girls named above.
Final Score: Sydney University 17.13 115 def. Auburn Giants 0.1 1.
7 teams are set to feature in Round 13, with the Blues, Golds, Plats and Bombers scheduled to play at No.1 Oval this Saturday.
