Cubs on the Rise: SUANFC’s Under 20s Women’s Team Building for the Future

Now in their second season in the inaugural Under 20s Women’s competition, the SUANFC Cubs are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most exciting and promising programs.

Under the guidance of long-time SUANFC member, player, and volunteer Josh Cutrupi, the Cubs are combining strong development, competitive intent, and a tight-knit team culture to take major strides in 2024.

A Group Committed to Growth

From the outset, it’s been clear that this is a group willing to do the work. “It’s a great bunch of girls who are very receptive to learning more each week,” said Cutrupi. “They take on all the feedback given to them during training and execute it during games. The commitment they’ve shown so far is really what’s driving this group to become better week by week.”

The squad is a vibrant mix of players aged 15 to 19, and despite the wide age range, the connection across the group has been a standout. “They all get along really well,” Cutrupi added. “That cohesion is important, and it’s reflected in how they play for each other on the field.”

Aiming High in 2025

After laying a strong foundation in 2024, the Cubs are now looking to push into finals territory. “We’re aiming to have winning records against the other five teams and give ourselves the best chance to play finals—and win a premiership,” Cutrupi said with a smile. “Kicking more accurately will be a focus this year. We’ve done the work to get the ball into dangerous spots, now it’s about converting.”

Squad Depth and Emerging Leaders

The Cubs’ 2025 campaign is being powered by a deep squad of 30+ players, many of whom are pushing each other to improve week after week. Leading from the front is captain Zara Kilborn, whose work rate and commitment have set the tone for the team. “She’s taken on a new role this year and has flourished in the last couple of games,” said Cutrupi.

Also making waves is Eve Hughes, who has transitioned from ruck to forward and is quickly becoming one of the most impactful players in the competition. “She’s really developing into a dominant forward,” said Cutrupi. “But truthfully, we’re blessed with depth this year—we roll deep.”

Mark Your Calendars: Friday Night Lights

One of the biggest matches on the calendar comes on Friday, 30 May, under the lights at Oval One. The Cubs will face off against UTS in a much-anticipated rematch after the opposition claimed the early-season honours. “It’s always a great test to go up against strong programs,” said Cutrupi. “But Friday Night Lights at Oval One – 7:30, yellow Sherrin, fans on the hill – nothing better.”

Pathway Programs Paying Off

The success of the Cubs is also a reflection of the work being done at the junior level. “We’ve got a lot of players who’ve come through the ranks of Newtown Swans and Glebe Greyhounds, including some current Glebe players running around in the Hoops,” Cutrupi said. “The strength of those pathway programs – especially with the younger girls – is what’s going to keep the women’s program at SUANFC strong for many years to come.”

As the 2025 season continues to unfold, there’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to the Cubs. With strong leadership, a deep and talented squad, and a coaching group committed to development, the future of women’s footy at Sydney Uni is in very good hands.
