SUANFC: Official Statement

23 August 2016

Following Sunday’s Division Five final at Henson Park, written complaints about SUANFC member behaviour were brought to the attention of the Vice Chancellor, the Executive Director of SUSF, AFL Sydney and the SUANFC Committee. We acknowledge that the nature of some of the support on display on Sunday from a segment of club members was unacceptable, both during and post-match, and was neither in line with our club values nor the AFL Sydney Code of Conduct.

SUANFC would like to unreservedly apologize to UTS Bats AFC and AFL Sydney, as well as those in attendance at Henson Park on Sunday for any offence or hurt caused. We would also like to extend our sincerest apologies to Sydney University Sport and Fitness, and Sydney University itself for representing them in a way unbecoming of two such respected institutions.

We would like to remind our players, members and supporters attending fixtures in the coming weeks that they are representing SUANFC to a wider audience amongst the AFL Sydney community. It goes without saying that a repeat of any of the actions or behaviour from Sunday will not be tolerated.

As we challenge for NEAFL and Division Five Premierships over the coming weeks, we know that passionate and boisterous support can mean the difference between winning and losing. We also have a responsibility to our sponsors and stakeholders to ensure that our behaviour doesn’t become anti-social or bring the club into disrepute. We strongly encourage all members and supporters to continue attending finals matches over the coming weeks to provide good natured and respectful support to both SUANFC teams and their opponents.

Michael Murray

Acting SUANFC President
