Last year, being the year that was, we decided it was an inappropriate time to contact our members and ask for donations to the club’s foundation.
We did however continue to accept donations from those who had already pledged towards both the Harvey Gordon Sporting Scholarship and Rod Tubbs Sporting Scholarship. The 2020 recipients of these scholarships (Nick Foster & Jack Hiscox) were grateful for both the financial and academic assistance that the scholarships provided during a very unusual year.
Harvey Gordon Sporting Scholarship
Today is the anniversary of Harveys passing, so no better day than to remember this great man than by announcing the recipient for his scholarship this year is Matt Dyster.
‘Matt Dyster came to SUANFC in 2017 from Junior Pathway club, Newtown JAFC. In 2017, at the age of 16, Matt made three appearances in the Sydney Uni U19’s Div 1 team while still playing with his junior club. Since coming to SUANFC, Matt has played 52 games across the U19’s Div 1, U19’s Div 2, Mens Premier Division reserves and Mens Premier division teams.
Matt is regularly seen at Oval 1 for home game days, helping with duties from Ground Managing, timekeeping and in the canteen. Matt’s enthusiasm and willingness to help earnt him the honour of Young Club Person of the Year in 2020. Even though Matt has now aged out of the Colts program, he is still regularly volunteering at Colts training sessions, assisting in coaching wherever needed and bringing his learnings of playing style from the senior program down into the Colts program.’
Rodd Tubbs Sporting Scholarship
The recipient of the Rodd Tubbs Sporting Scholarship for the second year in a row is Jack Hiscox.
‘Jack is a former Sydney Swans wingman, signed with the NEAFL program in 2017 and has represented our club at the top level since. Many Old Boys know Rodd Tubbs is a big Swans supporter so was very pleased to see a former Swan receive the scholarship in his name.’
Congratulations to both players. Please keep your eyes posted to the club website over the coming weeks to read more about these two worthy scholarship holders.
Foundation Going Forward
This year, the foundation will continue to raise money for sporting scholarships but will this year focus on raising funds for Facilities Improvements. We will start with raising funds to help pay for the new digital scoreboard that was installed on Oval No.1 at the end of last year.
This new scoreboard replaces the old wooden cricket scoreboard and can be tailored to suit both Aussie Rules and Cricket on any given weekend.
We hope that our members, supporters and friends consider this a worthy cause and if in a position to donate to the clubs general foundation account – click on the link below to download the donation form.
Remember all donations to SUANFC Foundation are tax deductible.
