Six Sydney Uni Teams Set to Kick of their Finals Campaign this Week

With the Home & Away season all wrapped up, it’s now time to turn our attention to the AFL Sydney 2020 Finals Series, and SUANFC has six teams heading into finals which kick off this weekend.

Unfortunately, after a tough Round 9 loss to North Shore, the Womens Premier Division team finished 6th on the ladder, just missing out on a spot in the final’s series. The women did not go down without a fight, putting on a quality display of football, particularly in the second half. The Womens Division 1 team played a solid season of footy and with many new players the team may not have made finals, but they certainly developed as a squad and will be ready for the challenge of 2021. The Mens Division 3 team faced a tough draw this season against some quality Division 3 sides. Each week, however, the team entered the field and played their best footy, always having a strong presence on the field. With a strong standard of Division 3 this season, our team finished 7th on the ladder, unfortunately bringing their season to an end, but they will be ready to put on another strong display of footy in 2021.

Heading into finals this weekend, we see our Mens Premier Division, Mens Premier Division Reserves, U19’s Division 1 & 2, and Mens Division 1 & 2 teams take the field. With only two rounds of finals for the Mens U19 Division 2 and Mens Division 1 & 2, the teams will be playing their semi-finals this weekend. Both the Mens Division 1 & 2 teams are putting in the work this week to take on Pennant Hills this weekend, with the Mens U19 Division 2 team facing a strong North Shore team. Having suffered a close loss to Pennant Hills in Round 1, the Mens Division 1 side will be looking to draw on all they have learnt this season and all of the hard work they have put in to ensure the win ends up on their side this time round.

The Mens Premier Division side will be taking on UNSW-ES at Henson Park this weekend in the qualifying final. The last time the teams met, The Students walked away with the win, however the team knows better then to remain complacent with all teams bound to step it up a notch in finals with the 2020 Premiership on the line. It will no doubt be another tough fight out at Henson Park between two high quality teams. Out at Henson Park also, the Mens Premier Division Reserve side will be coming out swinging against St George Dragons, aiming to get the win in their Elimination Final in order to remain in the competition for another week. The Mens U19 Division 1 team will be kicking of their finals campaign with a tough match against North Shore also at Henson Park. After a close loss for the students in Round 9, the team will be putting in the hard yards at training this week and no doubt bringing a whole new level of quality football to the field on Saturday.

Finals fever is in the air, but this weekend also marks the final round of the 2020 Masters Season, with a Gala Day being held at Mahoney Park, Marrickville. Our Masters team will be taken on the Camden Cats and looking to end their season on a high.

It’s officially Finals Footy and with The Students taking their best footy to the field both Saturday and Sunday, there is plenty to be excited about!
