This Saturday 17th April, The Peter Ramus Cup will be contested on Oval 1 as we welcome Inner West Magpies to our home turf.
The Peter Ramus Cup has been contested annually since 2008, and every year The Students and the Inner West Magpies come together to honour the late Peter Ramus, an outstanding player and coach, and even better club person and friend.
Peter Ramus was born and raised in Melbourne, where he developed a keen interest in AFL and the Collingwood Football Club. He also spent time in Canberra where he studied at ANU and played plenty of footy. He continued to play footy and took up coaching back in Melbourne with the Frankston Rovers- their tough hard style of football was exactly was Ramus was suited to.
Peter’s true love for the game was apparent when he moved to Sydney and started playing for the Newtown Angels- one club wasn’t enough footy for Ramus, so that’s when Sydney Uni was lucky enough to welcome Ramus to our ranks. Training Mondays and Wednesdays and player coaching on Saturdays with Uni, and then training Tuesdays and Thursdays and playing Sundays for Newtown, Ramus’s weeks were jam packed with the game he loved. Ramus was a welcome addition to the Uni coaching ranks, taking every team he coached to finals. His determination and dedication to the game was second to none, with Ramus even tricking his Newtown coach into letting him play in the final after injuring his shoulder the week before, nothing could keep him away from the game.
Once Ramus hung up his boots, he took the next step and served on the committee at Uni for many years, helping the club achieve many success over the years. Ramus, along with his wife Jan, were regular attendees at No. 1 Oval for game days (with Jan still regularly attending and helping out on at Oval 1), and they both organised and attended many SUANFC dinners and functions. Peter Ramus no doubt sits amongst the greatest volunteers and servants of our football club.
On Saturday, Uni will take the field with the hope to keep the Peter Ramus Cup at home for another year. Catch all the action at Oval No.1 on Saturday 17th April at 1:50pm.
