Round 6 saw SUANFC claim 3 wins, record their first draw in 2016, and say goodbye to club-favourite, Paul Markou.
5th Grade Golds: Sydney AFL Division 4
The Golds ensured their strong start to the season continued with a convincing 59-point win away to North Shore at the crack of dawn.
The first quarter was a high-scoring affair with the Students kicking 4 goals to North Shore’s 3, to take an early 8-point lead.
The Students came out firing in the second, keeping North Shore scoreless for the quarter, while booting 5 majors of their own.
To North Shore’s credit, the Bombers fought back after the main break to outscore the Students in the 3rd quarter by 2 points.
Any hope of a Bombers comeback was dashed in the final quarter, as the Students kicked 4 goals to North Shore’s 1, to run out comfortable winners over a quality opposition.
Sam Walker was best afield after a great game at fullback, while up forward, Lachlan Godfrey booted 5 goals.
Final Score: North Shore 7.6 48 def. by Sydney University 16.11 107.
U19 Colts: Sydney AFL U19s Division 1
The Colts stretched their unbeaten run to 5 games after accounting for South Coast in a tight game at No.1 Oval Saturday morning.
The Colts jumped out of the gates quickly, booting 6 goals to 1 in the first quarter, to lead by 34 points at the first break.
After the first quarter, the Colts could only manage 3 goals for the rest of the game, with 2 of them coming in the final quarter.
South Coast worked their way back into the contest, kicking 3 goals in the second, followed by 2 in the third, to trail by 7 points at the final break.
Rallied by exiting coach Paul Markou, the Colts held their nerve in the final quarter, closing out the game to win by one kick.
Gareth Maples, Tom Doyle and Luke Egan were voted best afield, while Charlie Mannix booted 3 majors.
Final Score: Sydney University 9.8 62 def. South Coast 8.8 56.
4th Grade Reds: Sydney AFL Division 2
The Reds travelled north with the Golds to play North Shore at Mortgage Choice Oval on Saturday.
The Students started the better of the two sides, winning the contested ball and hitting the scoreboard early. North Shore worked themselves into the game, to lead by 2 points at the first break.
The second quarter was similar to the first, with the Students starting well. Despite this, North Shore once again worked their way into the quarter, kicking 3 goals to 1, to increase their lead to 14 points at halftime.
The Students were held goalless in the third term, managing just 4 behinds to the Bombers’ 3 goals.
The last quarter saw North Shore start to run away with the game, kicking 5 goals to the Students’ 2, as the Bombers’ won by 51 points.
Luther Canute, Stephen Lloyd and Paul Younan were best afield for the Students.
Final Score: North Shore 14.10 94 def. Sydney University 6.7 43.
6th Grade Plats: Sydney AFL Division 5
The Plats travelled to Richmond for their Round 6 encounter with Nor-West on Saturday.
The Students started well, kicking 3 goals to Nor-West’s 4, to trail by just one kick at the first break.
Nor-West took control of the game in the second quarter, kicking 5 goals to the Students’ 0, as the Jets led by 40 points at halftime.
The Students took it up to the Jets in the second half, kicking 6 goals across the two quarters, but it was the Jets who collected the 4 points, booting 8 goals across the second half to win by 46 points.
Axel Norris kicked two goals in his best-on-ground performance, while Tom Hurley and Ryman White were also good for the Students.
Final Score: Nor-West 17.8 110 def. Sydney University 9.10 64.
Sydney University Bombers (Women’s)
In their closest game of the season to date, the Bombers enjoyed a hard-fought win over Newtown at Mahoney Park in Marrickville.
The Bombers held Newtown to just 1 goal in the first half, to lead by 21 at the main break.
The third quarter saw Newtown fight back, kicking 3 goals to 2, to trail by 14 points with only 1 quarter to play.
The Bombers hung tough in the last quarter, kicking 2 goals, to run out 20-point winners.
Meredith Gray kicked 3 goals for the Students, while Nic Barr, Casey Samuels and Alice Wood were best-on-ground.
Final Score: Newtown Breakaways 5.6 36 def. by Sydney University 8.8 56.
3rd Grade Blues: Sydney AFL Division 1
The Blues recorded SUANFC’s first draw of 2016, after a nail-biting encounter with St George.
The teams were even after a tight first quarter, as both teams could only manage the 1 goal each.
St George moved ahead in the second, kicking 3 goals to 1, with the Blues ruing missed chances after kicking 5 behinds for the quarter.
The Students began to convert opportunities in the third, kicking 4 goals to St George’s 1, as the lead changed hands once again.
Both teams had a handful of chances in the final quarter to win the game, but neither could convert as the Blues shared the 4 points with St George.
Nik Dale and Gabe Robbie both kicked 3 goals for the Students, while Michael Fogarty continued his good form for the Blues.
Final Score Sydney University 7.11 53 drew. St George 7.11 53.
2nd Grade Reserves: Sydney AFL Premier Division
The Prems were looking for their first win since Round 1, as first place St George visited Oval No.1.
After a poor performance last week, the Students started the game strongly, taking it up to the top-of-the-table St George side. Despite a good first quarter from the Students, St George led by 15 points at the first break.
The Students outscored St George in the second quarter, in what was a fiery contest between two sides who were both hungry for the 4 points.
The third quarter saw St George take control of the game, kicking 4 goals to 1, to lead by 35 points at the final break.
The Students were able to match St George around the contest, but were exposed in transition, as St George continued to score with ease.
A 50-point final margin puts the Students in danger of missing out on finals football, while St George now share the top of Premier Division with only East Coast.
Matt Powys and Luke Vella were strong contributors for the Students, while Rowdy Friend kicked 2 goals in just his second game of the Premier Division football.
Final Score: Sydney University 8.10 58 def. by St George 15.18 108.
This Saturday is set to be one of the biggest for 2016, with 5 games of football scheduled at No.1 Oval for Ladies Day. 3 games will be played out at Blacktown, including a visit from the Brisbane Lions.
