Following on from the Mens Division 2 teams win, there was an extra level of excitement, ancipation and determination in the air as the Mens Division 1 team took to the field to take on a previously undefeated North Shore team. What came next was a game that would end up being down to the wire, keeping everyone on their toes the whole way through!
Sydney Uni managed to gain the lead with a goal in the first 2mins, and it was no turning back from there. When North Shore came fighting to close the score gap, the students would only rise themselves proving too strong the whole game. The second quarter was extremely strong for the Students, scoring 4 goals to North Shores one and allowing the Students to go into half time with a 33 point lead. The Students would not become complacent however, as they knew that North Shore would come onto the field for the second half extremely strong and wanting to take the game back in their favour. It was exactly as they had suspectd, with North Shore dominating in goals in the third quarter kicking 5 goals to bring the difference to just 7 points going into 3/4 time.
Going into the last quarter, it was anyones game and both teams were tasting that premiership win- but it was the Students who pushed through and played their very best football to the very last second to take out the win. In the final minutes of the game it was Josh Harvey who pulled a mark 30metres out, and taking his time kicked true to pull the Students into their winning lead.
Sean Stokoe was named best on ground for his stellar performance, and an honourable mention also goes to Billy Lambert, kicking five goals for the students.
It was with excitement, and pure joy that Coach Jim Beard and Captain Peyton Caffey accepted the 2020 AFL Sydney Mens Division 1 Premiership trophy, making them back to back premiers!
An incredible effort to all involved with the Mens Division 1 team, all players, coaches and volunteers!
