SUANFC Welcomes Tim Spehr as New Men’s Head Coach for 2024 Season

Former Under 19s Division 1 premiership coach, Tim Spehr, has been announced as the new Head Coach of the men’s team for the upcoming 2024 season.

Spehr, a familiar face within the club, takes over the reins following the departure of Matt Vicic to the Sydney Swans VFL team. Spehr’s coaching journey in AFL began in 2016 and since then, his experience has spanned across various levels, including coaching several first-grade school teams, assisting in the SUANFC Women’s Program, and the SUANFC NEAFL program. His appointment as Head Coach of the SUANFC U19 Division 1 ‘Colts’ team in 2021 marked a important moment in his career.

Under Spehr’s leadership, the Colts team achieved back-to-back premierships in 2022 and 2023, a testament to his coaching prowess. Additionally, he played a crucial role in establishing a strong U19s Division 2 team, contributing significantly to the holistic future of the club. His high football IQ, unwavering commitment, and profound connection with the club’s youth and next generation were key factors in his appointment as the Head Coach of the men’s team.

Club President Jim Beard expressed his enthusiasm about Spehr’s appointment. “Tim has been an integral part of our club, contributing to almost every area, from the women’s program to the NEAFL, men’s lower grades, and the U19s program. His capability in running a winning program is evident from his success with our U19s, leading them to back-to-back premierships. We’re proud of Matt Vicic’s progression and wish him all the best. It’s equally exciting to offer Tim, a dedicated SUANFC individual, the opportunity to lead our Premier Division team. We’re all looking forward to the 2024 season,” Beard said.

Spehr was excited about what the team could achieve when asked about the appointment, “I’m honoured to accept the role as Men’s Premier Division Head Coach for 2024. I’m very lucky to inherit a program with this much talent and with so many good people in it. I’m excited to get started and see what the ceiling of this group can be – I have no doubt we can achieve some pretty outstanding things in the next 12 months if we get the work right and we do it together.”

Tim Spehr replaces Matt Vicic, who has left a significant legacy at SUANFC. As the club prepares for the 2024 season, Spehr’s appointment promises a new chapter of growth and success.

The pre-season for the men’s team kicks off on Tuesday, 27th November, at Bat and Ball Oval from 6pm. This will be an opportunity for the team to start building momentum under Spehr’s guidance and set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
